Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the ideas we write on, and a few about the site and the Stillhour app itself.

About quiet routine

What do you mean by "quiet routine"?

A day organized around a few small, low-noise habits — protecting a slow first hour, doing one thing at a time, keeping some real silence, closing the day with a short ritual — rather than around a packed schedule or constant input.

Is this about productivity?

Not primarily. Some of these habits may make focused work easier, but the interest here is in how a day feels to live through, not in output.

Do I need to change my whole schedule to try this?

No. Most essays describe a single small change — one protected hour, one closing gesture — rather than a full overhaul.

What is attention residue?

The lingering pull of a task you've just stopped, which can reduce how fully you focus on whatever comes next. It's discussed in the glossary and in the essay on attention residue.

Is single-tasking realistic with a busy job?

It's rarely realistic for an entire day. Most people who try it start with one block of time, not the whole schedule — see What Single-Tasking Actually Feels Like.

Does "quiet" mean total silence?

No. We usually mean the absence of background media — no radio or auto-playing video running in the background — rather than a sealed, soundproof room. More in In Praise of a Quiet House.

Why does the site mention paper reading specifically?

Because a fixed page behaves differently from a scrolling feed — there's no infinite supply of more. The essay Reading on Paper, Again goes into this.

About this site

Who writes Quiet Routine?

A small independent team. You can read about us on the about page.

Do you sell anything on this site?

The essays are free to read and don't sell anything. We do mention our own app, Stillhour, on its own page and in the app section of the home page.

Is any of this medical advice?

No. Nothing on this site is medical, psychological, or diagnostic advice. If something you're dealing with feels serious, please talk to a qualified professional.

How often do you publish?

There's no fixed schedule. New essays are added as they're finished, and the newsletter mentions them when they are.
